Former Royals in Community action
A team of former Reading legends took up an invitation in August to participate in the Barton Rovers football tournament at Little Heath School in Tilehurst.
The Reading ‘Old Boys’ joined nearly 150 other teams in a 2 day football spectacular. Sections ranged from Under-7s to Veterans, with most competing for the main Trophy or Plate.
The Reading FPA team made up of Mick Gooding, Kevin Watson, Ady Williams, Jordan Norris, Phil Brown, Neville Roach and Darren Brett, showed that they could still put on a show.
Hundreds of spectators, young and old, were captivated by the ‘old boys’ as they showed why they had made over 1800 League and cup appearances between them. The team was managed by another former ‘Royal’, George Friel, who himself made 19 appearances whilst at Elm Park.
The tournament was run on a league basis with the former ‘Royals’ needing only to beat TVSAS in the last game to get to the final. Unfortunately, they failed with TVSAS becoming the eventual winners and the ‘Royals’ finishing in third place.
Winning isn’t everything and fun was had by all, players and spectators alike.
