A 'Cabinet of memories'
Ever since Madejski Stadium opened in August 1998, Reading FC have been successfully running tours of the ground allowing families, School groups and individuals alike to see behind the scenes, and in line with the club’s ‘We belong ‘ initiative, there is now a new addition to the tours.
Reading FC are pleased to place on show, a ‘cabinet of memories’. A cabinet full of souvenirs, mementoes and personal ‘treasures’ donated by players and fans, young and old.
The cabinet tells the story of Reading FC over the last 60 years. From the austere Fifties of Blackman and Wheeler to the unsurpassed success of the ‘noughties’ with Harper and Doyle. You can see the pay slip and contract of a player of the austere fifties to the modern, light weight boots of Adam Le Fondre; even a match ball from the 1920’s.
‘Curator’ of the cabinet, Richard Wickson, says, ‘We are grateful to all those players and supporters who have kindly given their mementoes to the cabinet. Whilst the objects may not constitute the most precious treasures in terms of financial value what they do hold is a unique story. The cabinet is just not big enough to hold all our great memories’
He continued, ‘I would particularly like to thank the family of the late Brian Leach who donated personal items from his playing days in the 1950’s and to Terry’s of Caversham who kindly supplied the frames and mounts’
