Wokingham born Silvester, a striker, began his professional career at Elm Park under the guidance of manager Roy Bentley in 1965.

A prolific goal scorer for the Youth and reserve sides at Reading, he soon proved his abilities at first team level but found competition for places restricted. And after scoring 26 goals in 79 League appearances, Peter joined Norwich in 1969. Whilst at Norwich, won the second division championship in 1972 and scored 37 goals in 100 appearances.
