Wagstaff (brother of Tony Wagstaff, who also played for Sheffield United and Reading) was a defensive midfield player with Sheffield United from June 1963 until July 1969, making more than 150 appearances.

He, and Tony, left Sheffield United in 1969 for a £10,000 fee making him one of Jack Mansell's first signing as Reading manager.

He eventually played 229 time for Reading scoring 27 goals

Playing as a solid defender who could also play in midfield, he played for Reading F.C. until March 1975 when he joined Rotherham United, for whom he played until 1977.
