Having started his career at Luton Town, Martyn was brought to Reading by joint-managers Jimmy Quinn and Mick Gooding on a free transfer. Initially introduced to the side as a winger, he made a successful swop to striker and topped the goalscoring charts in 1998/99. However, a series of injuries and a strong competition for places kept his appearances at Madejski Stadium to 119 and 31 goals scored. Martyn continues to play locally for Thatcham Town and is a regular in the Former Players Association Charity XI team.
