Whilst on National Service in Wiltshire, Bobby was spotted by Charlton Athletic.
A skilful and nippy centre forward, he made his League debut in 1953 and was soon making a name for himself and attracting the attention of national selectors and was chosen to represent England at England B and Under 23 levels.
He represented the FA in their tour of South Africa in 1956, scoring 4 goals in 9 games.
A regular goal scorer at Charlton, Bobby carried on in the same vein when he moved to Elm Park in 1958.
Unfortunately, hampered by a knee injury, Bobby was forced to retire from the game in 1960 having played 65 times and scoring 26 goals for Reading.
