It was with neighbours Oxford United that Phil developed into one of the best Goalkeepers outside the Premier League. A popular figure at Oxford, it was the club's financial plight that caused Phil to leave Oxford and join West Bromwich Albion.

It was there that Phil first joined up with manager John Gorman, and when Gorman joined Reading as Assistant Manager,Phil followed becoming manager Alan Pardews first signing.

Injury was to restrict his appearances at Madejski Stadium and he was allowed to go out on loan. First at Tranmere Rovers and then at York City, but he moved out of the League to eventually join non-League Tamworth in 2003.

His career ended after he suffered a major injury playing for Tamworth during an FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay, although he attempted a short-lived comeback when he made one more appearance for Tamworth in an FA Trophy replay against Aldershot Town in 2004.
