Bernal had played almost 100 games of Spanish club football whilst on loan to Albacete Balompié and Xerez in the Spanish lower divisions after graduating from the Australian Institute of Sport.

On a tour of Europe in 1987 with the AIS he was spotted and signed by Ipswich Town.

Unfortunately problems with his work permit meant that he only played 9 senior matches with the Portman Road club before having to return to Australia.

However, under a change of European Union work regulations, with a Spanish paasport, meant that Andy was free to join Reading in 1994.

Manager Mark McGhee payed £30,000 for his signature and Andy went straight into the side that won the Third Division Championship season of 1993/94 and progressed to the Division One Play-off final in 1995.

Primarily a right-back, Andy played a lot of his games as a central defender, and on many occasions as captain.

In January 2000 he suffered a knee and ankle injury which ended his career before he returned to Australia as a Players agent.
