Born in Greenwich, Fred joined Tottenham Hotspur as a junior in May 1956 and spent nine years at the club. However, the central defender featured in only two matches but scored one goal for the Spurs in 1958–59.

Fred found opportunities at first team level limited, and he signed for Norwich City in July 1963. At Carrow Road he went on to make 111 League appearances between 1963–68.

After leaving Carrow Road he came to Reading where he played a further 72 matches and found the net once before retiring from the game.
