Gordon 'Fred' Neate
It is with great sadness that we report the death of former Reading player Gordon 'Fred' Neate, at the age of 78. Gordon was Reading FC through and through having spent three years at the club before turning professional and making his debut as a full-back at the age of 18 in 1959. Unfortunately injury limited his appearances for the Royals and after seven years he was forced to end his playing career.
Although already popular at the club he became well known to fans of all generations after staying with the club to take up the role of groundsman. After looking after the Elm Park pitch for decades he continued his job as the Royals moved to the Madejski Stadium. When Gordon retired at the age of 68 it was the end of 53 years working for the club.
For those who knew Gordon, a funeral will be held at Reading Crematorium on Wednesday 22nd May at 10.45am. A wake will be hosted by his family in the Royals Suite at Madejski Stadium from midday onwards.
