The Reading Football Club Former Players' Association regrets to report the death of former player Colin Meldrum, who passed away on October 4th, aged 77. Colin was born in Glasgow on November 26th, 1941 and, after showing potential as a young footballer, travelled south to join Arsenal as an apprentice. He made reserve team appearances for the Gunners before being released and signing for Watford in December 1960.
He made his Leaque debut with Watford but played only a few first lean games before becoming manager Roy Bentley's first signing for Reading, at a reported fee of £1,500 in April 1963.
It was the beginning of a long and distinguished career at Elm Park. Colin was a tough yet classy defender, usually at left back, sometimes at centre-half, and an inspirational captain of the team throughout most of his time with the club.
He also had a brief spell at centre-forward at a time when the team were struggling to score goals, and netted nine times in a total of 304 just team appearances. He was elected the club's Player of the Season for 1963-64 and 1964-65.
Colin left Reading in 1969 and signed for Cambridge United, where on August 15th 1970, he had the distinction of scoring that club's first Football League goal.
He also enjoyed a long coaching and managerial career with a number of clubs including York City. Workington, Scarborough, Barnet, Swansea City and Wealdstone. He also coached in Saudi Arabia and was chief scout for Hull City.
The Association sends it's condolences to the family and friends of Colin Meldrum, surely a candidate for the best ever, all time Reading XI and remembered with great respect by those of us who were fortunate enough to see him play.
Peacefully in the loving care of Rossall Nursing Home, Fleetwood on Friday, October 4th, 2019, aged 77 years. Beloved dad of Nicola, Stuart and Andrew and cherished grandad.
