Brian was recommended to Reading by club trainer Jimmy Wallbanks.

Signing, initially, on a two-month trial after completing his National Service, the young centre-forward was in the first team within a month and scored twice on his home debut, ending the season with 16 goals in 38 League games.

Opportunities became hard take in the first team after that, and although he continued to score regularly in the Reserves in season 1957/58, he moved onto Northampton Town in 1958.
